About Beyond The Gangway

I took my first cruise in the early 1980s on the Home Lines Oceanic. I was young enough that the details are hazy but the feeling isn't — the sense that you had stepped into a world that operated by different rules, where the ordinary stayed behind at the pier.

I've been chasing that feeling ever since.

More than a hundred cruises later, across four decades and most of the major lines, I've watched the industry transform completely. The ships got bigger. The brands multiplied. The pricing got complicated. And somewhere along the way, the idea of a genuinely premium cruise experience — one where you actually feel taken care of, where the staff knows your name, where the food changes every night — got buried under buffet lines and nickel-and-dime charges.

It didn't disappear. It just moved.

Today it lives in places like the MSC Yacht Club, the NCL Haven, and the Celebrity Retreat. Private enclaves inside massive ships, operating by the old rules while the rest of the vessel operates by the new ones. I've sailed the Yacht Club on the Meraviglia twice and the Haven on four different ships. I know what separates them, what they get right, and where they fall short.

That's what Beyond The Gangway is about.

No press trips. No sponsored content. No relationship with any cruise line that would give me a reason to tell you something is better than it is. Just forty years of reference points applied honestly to the products that are actually worth your money.

If you're considering a premium cruise enclave and want to know what you're actually getting — you're in the right place.
